“Way out There”-my latest mural for the City of Charleston WV commissioned by the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (majority funding from private donation)—The painting depicts a lone hiker and his dog in a vast West Virginia landscape. The painting revolves around the themes of escapism, solitude, the passage of time, and the connection between people and nature. (For those that have seen my Art Bus project, this is sort of the spiritual sequel to that piece)

Each section is a different time of day(daytime, sundown, and night) that forms one large landscape done in three distinct color pallets. The nature of the steps helps to create a 3-d effect as the things closest to the viewer (wildflowers, insects, etc.) were painted large with more detail as the background elements were painted smaller with less detail.

The painting was done on 18 5ftx12.5ft sheets of poly tab aka mural cloth in my studio to make up the entire image and then cut into 192 separate 6”x12.5ft strips (2 strips per step). After installation additional painting touch ups were done along with layers of a protective coating.

Thanks to the private donation, The Charleston Coliseum, The City of Charleston Office of Public Art, the many volunteers that helped install the painting including the clients of Recovery Point, and others!
